During the months of June and July 2000, the IJmuiden Island Fort was renamed "Fort Lux". The core of this project was an exhibition of contemporary art in and around the fort, featuring artists from various countries who work with light, sound, projections, video and photography. They are drawing their inspiration from the building itself, its surroundings and from the historical, economic and social aspects of the region around the mouth of the North Sea Canal.

The Fort
At the mouth of the North Sea Channel, which connects Amsterdam to the world, lies an island with an underground fort of concrete corridors and chambers. The fort, called Fortress IJmuiden was built between 1880 and 1887 as the first and largest work in the Defence Line of Amsterdam. This Defence Line consisted of a ring of fortresses, fortifications and hydraulical works such as locks, dams and dikes, layed out in a circle around Amsterdam. In times of crisis a large area outside the defence ring could be flooded thus creating a formidable barrier for enemy forces.

Hannes Wallrafen

Even on his first visit, the silent and sacred atmosphere in the innermost parts of the fort impressed Wallrafen. It smells of the past. Time is present here and appeals directly to the memory.
He has chosen to create a series of wraithlike projections in closed rooms. Slide projections on walls and ceilings break through the physical space by establishing a bridge to the outer world. The visitor can view these through the open doors. A number of archetypal and historical images, in the form of video and 8 mm projections, can be seen in the little windows separating the rooms from the passages. A skating pair turning endless circles. A girl wandering through the passages of Fort Lux.
The visitor enters a theatre full of memories, where inside and outside, present and past, air and water melt into each other.
