The secret life of Salmon 1992 A visual story about salmon

The Story of the Fish was an initiative of the National Fishing Museum in Vlaardingen. The objective of the commission was explicitly related to visual arts. The goal was to give illustration, in this case photography, back its status. Especially in scientific publications about flora and fauna of the 18th century, a lot of attention was paid to illustrations. The plant or the animal wasn’t pictured alone, but often they were placed in a landscape or in a situation that referred to the literary or symbolic value of the object. This relationship between art and science disappeared in the 19th century, when the status of illustrations became less important than scientific arguments. With this commission, the Fishing Museum tried to restore the relationship between art and science. The exhibition was presented in the form of an installation. Designers Jan de Graaf and Arthur Meyer designed the exhibition. Wallrafen’s contribution was the first one in a series of seven. Later on, Gina Kranendonk, Taco Anema, Thomas Lenden and Piet van Leeuwen also accomplished a commission.

This project was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Ministry of Welfare, Public Health and Cultural Affairs, the National Fishing Bureau and H. van Wijnen of Salmon Smokers.
